Hotel Encounter Nepal
We stayed here our one-night in Kathmandu. We checked out a few other hotels but they were full. This is in a good location, Thamel, one of the city's tourist districts...old buildings with lots of restaurants, bars, and shopping. Also, we were able to walk to/from the Monkey Temple (Swayambhunath Stupa) from here. This is the famous stupa with "the eyes" painted on it, which of course, happened to be under renovation while we were there. If you are accustomed to "comfort", well, this is an experience BUT it was safe and cheap in a good location, so we were fine. Also, we chose the cheapest room as it was available and only for one night. We arrived before noon and left for Pokhara early the next morning. Note, there is a nice little garden restaurant here. We didn't eat here, but did have tea out there and it was very nice. They have hotel pickup at the airport if booked ahead.

We stayed at the sister hotel in Pokhara. Based on that experience I would recommend giving this new hotel a try. It opens late October 2009. They have a hotel pickup at the airport if booked ahead.
